What resistance classes are there according to the standard?
Six in total. From RC1 with the lowest to RC6 with the highest security performance. Windows in resistance class RC2 generally offer solid basic protection against burglars using simple tools, i.e. against so-called opportunist thieves or inexperienced offenders. According to the guidelines, a window should offer resistance for around three minutes, but this is only a rough estimate.
In our view, resistance classes RC2, RC3 and RC4 are particularly important for residential buildings - although this naturally depends on the individual circumstances on site. Windows in class RC1 offer hardly any protection worth mentioning, while RC5 and RC6 are generally too solid for the private sector: with excessive face widths, high weight and limited sizes. RC5 or RC6 windows are more suitable for military bases or nuclear power stations.

Don't RC2 windows restrict the architectural signature?
On the contrary: you can also install large-format RC2 windows several meters wide where you previously installed window grilles for security reasons. This allows you to create breathtaking views and flood the rooms with light and air.
What's more, RC2 windows look virtually indistinguishable from "normal" windows. They are available in a wide variety of colors, formats and materials. A secure "fortress" therefore does not have to look like a fortress, but leaves practically all design options open.
If you take a closer look, you will recognize RC2 windows by the so-called mushroom head locking mechanism: imagine a mushroom with a round head. If this is pushed into a guide, the mushroom head tilts in the event of an attack and can thus lock securely. The larger RC2 windows are, the more locking points they contain. All the way around.

In summary, it can be said that an RC2 window is an effective measure for burglary protection. According to the DIN EN 1627:2021 II test standard, it offers around three minutes of resistance to an untrained perpetrator using a simple tool - but be careful: the glass is NOT attacked, i.e. tested. The intended P4A glass can usually be smashed after just a few seconds! It is logical that it should be as secure as the RC2 window, as is the case with SILATEC P6B security glass, for example.
The standard defines a total of 6 resistance classes, from RC1 with the lowest to RC6 with the highest security performance. RC2, RC3 or RC4 windows are generally recommended for upmarket properties and private homes.
