Securing Windows
Therefore, making windows burglar-proof means to gain the crucial time, in which a burglar has no chance. For this reason, police experts also advise mechanical burglary protection as the indispensable basis for every security concept.

Retrofitting of burglar-proof windows – What are the advantages, what are the disadvantages?

Existing, older windows without burglary protection can often be secured at a later date. For this purpose, the fittings of the present windows must be replaced by those with mushroom head locks. The existing glass panes must also be replaced with burglar-proof glass – at least P6B glass. Whether windows can be made burglar-proof afterwards depends on the substance of the windows. As a rule of thumb, the more solid the window is, the higher the probability that the windows can be made secure. For windows dating from the 1980s onwards, this is usually possible. Retrofit systems that are only applied to the existing window at one point are not very effective, as the window can be levered open at another point.

What classes of burglar-proof windows are there?

There are 6 resistance classes from RC1 to RC6. The lowest burglary protection is offered by windows of resistance class RC1. The highest is class RC6. Practical break-in tests show that resistance classes RC1 and RC2 offer little to no break-in protection. RC3 and RC4 anti-burglar windows offer medium to high protection against burglary, while classes RC5 and RC6 can withstand attacks by very experienced burglars for even longer. RC3 and RC4 burglar-proof windows are particularly suitable for burglary protection of exclusive private homes. The burglar-proof glass should at least correspond to resistance class P6B. A type of glass has also proven to be particularly effective: SILATEC Private Protection

What does RC2 window mean?

Burglar-proof windows are divided into 6 resistance classes according to European standards: from RC1 to RC6, with RC6 offering the highest burglary protection. Windows of resistance class RC1 and RC2 offer little to no burglary protection. Windows in the RC3 to RC4 classes provide effective protection against skilled offenders. Classes RC5 to RC6 provide maximum burglary protection over a long period, even under attack by very experienced perpetrators.
